Tenants Victoria founded the Make Renting Fair Campaign to make renting fair for everyone and to prevent it becoming an option of last resort for those with no other choices.
The Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill 2018 was passed by Victoria’s Parliament in early September 2018. This marks the first significant change to the state’s tenancy laws in twenty years. Sweeping reforms include abolishing ‘no reason’ notices to vacate, subjecting rental properties to minimum property standards that address health and safety concerns, allowing tenants to undertake certain minor modifications, and making it easier to rent with pets. Tenants Victoria has welcomed State Government’s plan to undertake what The Age has described as ‘the biggest spend on social housing since the global financial crisis’ [The Age, May 17, 2020].
There is a need for sustained investment in social housing as part of the solution to the shortage of affordable housing in our state.
We recently joined with other housing and homelessness peak bodies to launch the campaign Make Social Housing Work — a new blueprint proposing Victoria boosts its proportion of social housing.
