Your last chance to influence Victoria’s new rental laws

The Victorian Government has released the Regulatory Impact Statement and draft regulations for its new rental laws, due to come into effect on 1 July 2020. They are holding a short five-week public consultation.

Have your say now via the Engage Victoria website.

All feedback must be submitted to Consumer Affairs Victoria by Wednesday 18 December, unless an extension of time has been granted.

You can contact Consumer Affairs Victoria by phone on 1300 558 181 if you have any questions, need help or want a hard copy of the submission to fill out. You can request more time and alternative ways to submit your feedback.

Tenants Victoria CEO, Jennifer Beveridge, said her team will be analysing the proposed regulations in full to assess their impact on over 1.5 million Victorian renters. Tenants Victoria will provide an initial response as soon as possible and then a comprehensive submission closer in early December.

“The community has been waiting over a year since these laws first passed through parliament and we are keen to see them come into effect.”

“However, it is critically important that the regulations that underpin them are well drafted to deliver the improvements in safety, stability and privacy that renters were promised.”

“Tenants Victoria is Victoria’s only specialist tenancy advice legal service and we will be active in representing the views and interests of renters throughout this consultation process.”
