Some renters will miss out on the benefits of the new laws

Did you know some of the new laws don’t apply to all renters? They will only apply to some renters, for example those who move into a new property or sign a new lease after 1 July 2020.

This means some renters will miss out on the benefits coming in next year, such as homes having to meet minimum standards or rental providers having to carry out safety related activities.

Minimum standards will only apply to people moving into a new property, and safety related activities will only apply to people signing a new lease after 1 July 2020.

This means anyone who isn’t likely to move any time soon and who is on a periodic lease (e.g. month to month) and unlikely to sign a new lease will not get the benefit of these new laws.

Public and community housing renters will be especially affected, as well as long term renters in private rentals. We think this is grossly unfair!

If you think this is unfair make sure you tell the Victorian Government you think the new laws should apply to all renters, not just those who move into a new property or sign a new lease.

See our report card and read what we think of the draft regulations.
